the what and where pathways in the brain

It is quite amazing to think about how specialized the brain is for processing visual information. Color and movement are processed in different parts of the visual system.

  1. It used to be thought that an image was received on the retina fully formed, but we now know that what we see is actually processed by separate regions and cells in the brain. While perhaps oversimplified it is widely understood that visual stimuli are processed in two major pathways "the where" and "the what" pathway. The where pathway resides in the parietal lobes and like the parietal lobes it deals with motion and spatial processing. The what pathway in contrast is located in the temporal lobes and primarily deals with object, face recognition, and color.
